Ian Kent of Certax Accounting runs an independent accountancy and tax advisory service for SMEs linked with a nationwide network of accounting practices.

“The important point to stress is that I provide the service and contact with my clients personally. The Certax Network is available for specialist support should the need arise. It’s like having the resources of a much larger office available for my clients’ benefit but without the overheads…….and without losing the personal touch!”

What services do you provide?
“My core business comprises the traditional accountancy and tax services of an accountancy practice. I am more interested in the quality of service my clients get than in churning through as many clients as possible. I put strong emphasis on tax planning and general financial and business advice, although the accounting and form filling routines also have to be done! I offer additional services for clients who want monthly or quarterly accounts or management reports, assistance with strategic or business planning, advice on business structure and company formation, advice on bookkeeping and record keeping, advice on raising finance, reviews of operations and business controls etc.”

Great! But how are you qualified to do this work?
“I am a chartered accountant (trained in Glasgow where they should know a thing or two about being careful with money) and a fellow of the Institute of Internal Auditors. I have 30 years experience in operational review and senior finance positions with a variety of blue-chip organisations, internationally and in the UK. I think it is important to stress these points as since March 2004 anyone, with or without qualifications, can act as accountant/ tax advisor to businesses with turnover up to £5.6 million.”

Again, great! But I am only a self-employed tradesman not a large company….
“So are many of my clients! Many don’t want the hassle of negotiating tax and other regulatory minefields on their own. I firmly believe that proper planning and advice can help to avoid loads of problems and stressful situations at a later date.

How much do you charge?
“I operate from my home in Godalming (near Guildford, Surrey) and I charge very competitive rates. The initial consultation is free. I can offer a fixed fee and payment plan for most work so that my clients can budget accordingly.”
