SBC MEETING OCTOBER 2007

SBC OCTOBER 2007 MEETING

For October we returned to the prestige venue of the Oak Suite at the University of Surrey for a SpeedNetwork100 meeting - one of the occasions when we ask non-Members for a small fee to come and join in the fun.

We began with some informal networking over the usual succulent buffet, which is always very welcome at the end of the working day! Then we adjourned to the main room and got down to 45 minutes of serious speed networking. Most people are familiar with the concept of this frantic activity, but if you haven’t tried it yet we can heartily recommend it.

One of the benefits is that it makes you focus on explaining exactly what your business does in just two minutes – several times, in quick succession! If you’ve never tried this exercise before, it’s not easy – but if you practise and refine your two-minute pitch, you will be able to use it as a powerful aid to get more out of every networking event you attend in future.

We then took a break for another visit to the buffet, after which Keith Grover and Paul Cawthorne hosted an informal open discussion on the value of networking and how to approach it with the right attitude and make it work for you.

Then we regrouped refreshed, for a final session of speed networking, by the end of which everybody had interacted with more than a dozen different people during the course of the evening, and added them to their contacts list. A fun and productive evening was had by all.

The meeting ended at 9pm as usual, after which the SBC Beverage Circle headed to the Varsity Bar for a welcome nightcap!
