This
month we gathered at the University of Surrey for what
was informally billed as ‘the Dr Joe Gelona Show’!
The evening began with the formal networking session,
where our Guests have a chance to meet the Members.
Joe was standing in for Paul Cawthorne as facilitator,
while Paul is away exploring the golf courses of sunny
Portugal. Makes a change from the golf courses of Surrey
– but we do wonder where Paul manages to fit work
into his crowded schedule! |
Joe was also our main speaker for the
evening in his capacity as a business psychologist and coach.
The subject was motivation, and how to ‘Raise your game
by boosting your self-motivation’. After introducing
and defining his subject, Joe explained how internal motivation
is the product of our cognitive state combined with our emotional
reaction to any given situation.
We are driven by two key emotions – fear and desire
– and fear has been shown to impair mental capacity.
So we perform better if motivated by the desire to achieve
clear goals and realise our own vision. In short, we need
to accentuate the positive!
Our session was interactive, with the audience completing
a self-analysis survey comprising various multiple-choice
questions, and following up by working in pairs to discuss
issues arising from the survey, and discover what motivates
us as individuals.
Joe gave us plenty of suggestions and ideas to take away
and apply in our own businesses, so we can become more effective
and happier in our work. We need to increase our awareness
of what drives us by assessing our resources and belief systems,
and focusing on our strengths This will help us to have a
positive outcome expectancy – and if we expect the best
from ourselves and our business, that’s what we’ll
get! Thanks, Joe, for a thought-provoking evening.
After the meeting, the Beverage Circle decided to try out
the Anchor and Horseshoes in Burpham – a particularly
smoky venue which we won’t be hurrying back to (although
the beer was well kept)!
